Sleep Apnoea Doesn’t Just Affect Men
For many years sleep apnoea was considered a condition that primarily affected middle-aged men. We now know this is not true.
Many women have sleep apnoea, but their symptoms can look very different.
Common Symptoms in Women
Women may report:
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Morning headaches
- Poor concentration
- Low energy
Because these symptoms are less recognised, women are often diagnosed much later than men.
Hormonal Changes Can Increase Risk
Changes during:
- Pregnancy
- Menopause
- Weight gain
- Ageing
can increase the likelihood of developing sleep-disordered breathing.
Why Diagnosis Matters
Untreated sleep apnoea may contribute to:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes
- Reduced quality of life
- Mental health challenges
If you feel tired despite adequate sleep, it may be worth discussing a sleep assessment with your healthcare provider.
