What Does Oxygen Saturation Mean?
During a sleep study, one of the most important measurements is your oxygen saturation level, often referred to as SpO₂.
This number tells us how much oxygen is being carried by your blood.
Why Can Oxygen Drop During Sleep?
When breathing becomes restricted or stops altogether:
- Airflow reduces
- Oxygen levels fall
- The body becomes stressed
- The heart works harder
These episodes are known as oxygen desaturations.
Why Are Desaturations Important?
Many people focus only on their Apnoea Hypopnoea Index (AHI).
However, oxygen levels can sometimes tell an equally important story.
For example:
- How low did oxygen fall?
- How often did it occur?
- How long was oxygen below 90%?
- Did oxygen spend extended periods below 88%?
These factors help clinicians understand overall risk.
Potential Consequences
Repeated overnight oxygen desaturation may contribute to:
- High blood pressure
- Cardiac rhythm disturbances
- Heart disease
- Cognitive impairment
- Increased fatigue
Key Message
Sleep studies are about much more than counting breathing events. Understanding oxygen levels helps provide a more complete picture of health.
