Lifestyle Health & Wellness Program
Stronger Bodies. Stronger Communities. Stronger Futures.
At First Australians Health, we understand that many chronic health conditions share common underlying risk factors. Weight gain, increased body fat, reduced muscle mass, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, poor sleep, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease are often closely connected.
Our Lifestyle Health & Wellness Program has been developed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples improve their overall health through evidence-based assessment, education, support, and ongoing coaching.
Rather than focusing solely on weight, we focus on improving body composition, increasing muscle mass, reducing excess body fat, improving physical function, and supporting long-term health outcomes.
Our goal is not simply weight loss. Our goal is healthier bodies, improved wellbeing, and sustainable lifestyle change.
Why Lifestyle Matters
Many chronic diseases affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are closely linked to lifestyle and body composition.
Excess body fat and reduced muscle mass have been associated with:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypertension
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Respiratory disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Fatty liver disease
- Reduced mobility
- Chronic pain
- Depression and anxiety
These conditions often occur together and can significantly impact quality of life, family wellbeing, workforce participation, and long-term health outcomes.
Even modest improvements in physical activity, nutrition, muscle strength, sleep quality, and body composition can result in significant health benefits.
Understanding Body Composition
Traditional scales only measure body weight. However, weight alone does not tell the full story.
Two people may weigh exactly the same but have very different health risks depending on the amount of muscle and body fat they carry.
For this reason, First Australians Health focuses on body composition assessment.
Body composition testing may measure:
- Total body fat percentage
- Lean muscle mass
- Visceral (internal) fat
- Body water levels
- Weight distribution
- Metabolic indicators
- Muscle balance and symmetry
Monitoring body composition allows our team to track meaningful health improvements beyond simple weight loss.
A reduction in body fat combined with an increase in muscle mass is often a much better indicator of improved health than body weight alone.
Integrated Health Assessment
Our Lifestyle Health & Wellness Program works alongside our sleep, respiratory, cardiac, and pathology services to provide a comprehensive picture of health.
Assessments may include:
Sleep Health Assessment
Poor sleep and obstructive sleep apnoea are strongly associated with:
- Weight gain
- Type 2 diabetes
- Hypertension
- Reduced physical activity
- Heart disease
- Fatigue
Treating sleep disorders can often improve energy levels, exercise capacity, and overall health outcomes.
Respiratory Assessment
Respiratory impairment may limit exercise capacity and reduce quality of life.
Testing may include:
- Spirometry
- Portable respiratory testing
- Advanced lung function testing where appropriate
Improving respiratory health can help patients become more physically active and support healthier lifestyle outcomes.
Cardiac Health Assessment
Cardiovascular screening may help identify:
- Hypertension
- Arrhythmias
- Cardiovascular risk factors
- Exercise limitations
Understanding cardiovascular health helps guide safe and appropriate exercise programs.
Pathology Screening
Where appropriate, pathology testing may assist in identifying:
- Diabetes risk
- Cholesterol abnormalities
- Thyroid disorders
- Iron deficiency
- Inflammatory conditions
- Metabolic health concerns
These assessments help identify barriers to successful lifestyle change and support personalised treatment plans.

Focus on Fat Loss and Muscle Gain
Many weight loss programs focus purely on reducing body weight.
At First Australians Health, we believe a healthier body composition is a more meaningful goal.
Our programs aim to:
- Reduce excess body fat
- Increase lean muscle mass
- Improve strength and mobility
- Improve cardiovascular fitness
- Improve sleep quality
- Improve respiratory function
- Improve metabolic health
- Support long-term disease prevention
By improving the balance between fat mass and muscle mass, many patients experience:
- More energy
- Better sleep
- Improved breathing
- Better blood pressure control
- Improved blood glucose control
- Reduced chronic disease risk
- Improved confidence and wellbeing
Creating Healthier Futures
Lifestyle change is not about quick fixes or short-term diets.
It is about providing people with the knowledge, skills, support, and resources needed to create sustainable improvements in health and wellbeing.
Through culturally safe education, clinical support, community partnerships, and evidence-based interventions, First Australians Health aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to take control of their health journey.
By improving sleep, respiratory health, cardiovascular health, nutrition, physical activity, and body composition, we can help reduce the burden of chronic disease, strengthen communities, increase participation in education and employment, and contribute to Closing the Gap.
Better health starts with small changes. Stronger bodies create stronger families, stronger communities, and healthier futures for generations to come.
